Working on the ‘sunny side’ of consulting

Simon comes from a small and tranquil village in the Oberallgäu. He studied business administration in the traditional way, first at LMU Munich for his Bachelor's degree with a semester abroad in Finland and then at the University of Münster for his Master's degree. This was also one of the reasons why, as a village child from the Allgäu, he ended up in Osnabrück. In his free time, he enjoys doing sport, mostly in the gym, but his favourite thing to do is to go hiking in the great outdoors.

'Instead of cutting costs with an axe and making life difficult for local employees, we generally use pricing and sales measures to increase revenue - something that is often much more profitable and, in my experience, also more fulfilling.'

How did you find your way into consulting?

During my master's degree, I completed a six-month internship in the in-house consulting department of a large German corporation and discovered my enthusiasm for consulting. However, I quickly realised that I would prefer to work in external consulting after my studies in order to gain more insight into the various sectors. Prof. Roll & Pastuch immediately stood out in my search, especially because of its focus on the ‘sunny side’ of consulting. Instead of cutting costs with an axe and making life difficult for local employees, we generally use pricing and sales measures to increase revenue - something that is often much more profitable and, in my experience, also more fulfilling.

How were your first few months?

My first few months were consistently positive. I was warmly welcomed by my colleagues and immediately felt the strong team spirit. I particularly enjoy cooking together by and for colleagues at the Osnabrück site.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

It's often challenging to familiarise yourself with completely new sectors and topics that you usually had no contact with either during your studies or in your private life. But it's also nice to see how quickly you learn a wide variety of things and can develop further every day. Whilst yesterday you were dealing with condition systems in DIY stores, today you are reading up on the importance of potassium chloride for open heart surgery. There are probably very few professions that can offer such variety.

What do you particularly like about Prof Roll & Pastuch?

What I particularly like is the very friendly and honest interaction with each other. You immediately realise that constructive cooperation is the top priority at R&P and that elbows are not pulled out at every corner like at many other consultancies.

To what extent has working at Prof. Roll & Pastuch contributed to your personal and professional development?

In the first few months, I've already learnt a lot of new things about myself and have been reassured that structured and data-driven work suits me. My Excel and PowerPoint skills have definitely improved significantly - I'm already annoying my girlfriend with them for my next holiday planning.

Which project have you enjoyed the most so far and why?

I found an audit project at a market leader for industrial applications particularly exciting. On the one hand, it was very interesting to deal with an industry that I hadn't even considered before, but without which our daily lives would not be possible in this form. On the other hand, it was very surprising to see how simple and outdated some of the processes in such a large company still are.
