From an industrial clerk to a sustainability consultant

Anna started at the Sustainable AG Unternehmensberatung with a 3-month internship. Before completing her Master's in Sustainable Resource Management, she wanted to take the opportunity to get to know the daily life in a consulting firm. After submitting her Master's thesis, she was immediately hired as a Junior Consultant. Since then, Anna has been involved in a variety of sustainability projects and now brings her experience as a leader to our growing company.

"I support companies in recognizing their impact on the environment and society, identifying risks and opportunities and involving stakeholders."

Actually, I never really wanted to work in a consulting firm, but through an internship, I found my way to the Sustainable AG Unternehmensberatung in 2019 and got to know a consulting daily life that I truly enjoy. After finishing my high school diploma, I completed training as a foreign language industrial clerk and then pursued a Bachelor's degree in International Business. During this time, I worked in various roles in both medium-sized companies and international corporations. This allowed me to apply my business knowledge directly to a wide range of tasks and gain valuable insights into business processes and structures. It was very exciting, but I still wanted to do a Master's in topics I truly feel passionate and intrinsically motivated about: Nature & Sustainability.

I found the perfect degree program for this: Sustainable Resource Management at TU Munich. During these two years of my Master's program, I built on my knowledge of ecological topics and deepened it in my specializations in forest ecosystems and climate studies. I also used my Master's to explore jobs outside the industry, such as working as a research assistant or project collaborator in the startup sector. Just before submitting my Master's thesis, a fellow student pointed out an internship opportunity at the Sustainable AG Unternehmensberatung. I was curious, and it worked out quickly.

When I started at Sustainable, there were about 15 people in the company. Sustainability in the business context was still a niche topic back then. For me personally, this had the advantage that I didn't have a specific focus in the project work. Projects on sustainability strategies, climate risk analysis, or human rights due diligence are just a few examples. Collaborating with clients to figure out how to implement sustainability in their businesses has always been a lot of fun. This is still part of my responsibilities at Sustainable. Now, we are over 100 people and have specialized in specific topics. I have found my place in the area of sustainability management and share my experiences with newer colleagues.

Sustainability management means, on one hand, keeping an overview of the many sustainability topics: climate, environment, human rights, corporate due diligence, etc. On the other hand, it also requires analytical, strategic, and long-term thinking. I support companies in recognizing their impact on the environment and society, identifying risks and opportunities, and involving stakeholders. Together with our clients, I develop sustainability strategies that provide answers to questions such as: How do I strategically anchor sustainability topics in the company? What should be prioritized? What goals are needed? What measures should be taken? We are at the forefront of developments and create solutions for companies to meet regulatory requirements, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.
