From an industrial clerk to a sustainability consultant

Anna started at sustainable AG with a 3-month internship. Before completing her Master's degree in Sustainable Resource Management, she wanted to take the opportunity to get to know the day-to-day workings of a consultancy. After completing her Master's thesis, she immediately started her permanent position as a junior consultant. Since then, Anna has been able to support a range of sustainability projects and now she is sharing her expericenes with her team as a new leader in our growing company.

I support companies in recognizing their impact on the environment and society, identifying risks and opportunities and involving stakeholders.

Anna Schätzl

I never really wanted to work in a management consultancy, but through an internship I found my way to sustainable AG in 2019 and found a consulting job that I really enjoy. After graduating from high school, I trained as a foreign language industrial clerk and then went on to study for a Bachelor's degree in International Business. During this time, I held various positions in both medium-sized companies and international corporations. This allowed me to apply the content of my business studies directly to my varied activities and gave me a good insight into company processes and structures. That was very exciting, but I still wanted to do a Master's degree in a subject that I was really enthusiastic about and intrinsically motivated by: nature and sustainability

I found the perfect degree program for this: Sustainable Resource Management at the TU Munich. During these two years of my Master's degree, I was able to build up knowledge on ecological topics and deepen it in my specializations in forest ecosystems and climate studies. I also used my Master's to get to know other jobs outside of industry, e.g. as a research assistant or project employee in the start-up sector. Shortly before submitting my Master's thesis, a fellow student introduced me to an advertised internship position at sustainable AG. I was curious and it quickly worked out.

At sustainable, I started straight away with lots of exciting tasks, so I was quickly involved in various projects. I thought it was great that I was able to take on responsibility straight away and contribute my ideas. What I found so special: My colleagues are open, helpful and friendly with each other. Everyone here is passionate about sustainability. This makes it easy to join and stay in the team. I was sure that sustainable would be the perfect place for me to apply my previous career and my interests in sustainability issues.

Growing togetherWhen I started at sustainable, there were about 15 people in the company. At that time, sustainability was still a niche topic in the corporate context. For me personally, this had the advantage that I didn't have a specific focus in my project work. Projects on sustainability strategies, climate risk analyses or human rights due diligence are just a few examples. Working with customers to think about how sustainability can be positioned within the company has always been a lot of fun. This is still part of my job at sustainable. We are now well over 100 people and specialize in certain topics. I have found my place in the area of sustainability management and share my previous experience with newer colleagues here.

On the one hand, sustainability management means keeping track of the multitude of sustainability issues: Climate, environment, human rights, corporate due diligence, etc. On the other hand, it also requires analytical, strategic and long-term thinking. I support companies in recognizing their impact on the environment and society, identifying risks and opportunities and involving stakeholders. Together with clients, I develop sustainability strategies that provide answers to the following questions: How do I strategically anchor sustainability issues in the company? What should be prioritized? What goals are needed? Which measures should be tackled? In doing so, we keep our finger on the pulse and develop solutions on how companies can implement regulatory requirements, e.g. the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive."
